I just put one of Bass Pro's RedHead Ascent Red Dot Sights on my Ruger MKI 22 autoloader and man was I impressed. The site was only $50 and mounts right onto a Weaver type scope mount. I put it on, took a few shots to zero it in, and was soon mowing down 50 yard targets with ease (off the bench of course). Hitting 2" targets easily at 50 yards and putting a mag full of ammo into a 3/4" hole at 25. I love this thing. Point of impact has not changed a bit in 5 trips to the range. Read Bass Pro's description below, then go get one!!

Increase your accuracy on every shot with these affordable, lightweight, compact sights. Featuring rugged, durable anodized construction for years of accurate sighting. Ideal for use on turkey guns, slug guns, handguns and airguns! Sporting a large, bright 4-MOA red dot that can be adjusted for any lighting condition with an 11-position rheostat switch. Available with a built-in (WS) Weaver®-style mount. Powered by 1 long-lasting 3V lithium battery (included). RD30/22 models have a .22 Tip-Off mount for use on rimfire rifles and airguns. Length: 3.8". Available in Matte, Silver, or AP Green Camo.

RedHead Red Dot Sights feature:
Durable anodized construction
Bright 4 MOA red dot
11-position rheostat switch for different lighting conditions
3V lithium battery included

The Old Deer Hunters Web Site

Guns, Hunting, Shooting at The Old Deer Hunters

Shooting Accessory Bags

Dog-gone-good, makers of high quality shooing bags and rifle rest bags, have introduced a shooting accessories bag. The bag measures appoximately 7" x 7" x 3" and has two zippered compartments with a belt loop for attaching to your belt. The bags come in green or desert camo and are made of soft quiet seude cloth.

These bags are great for a short trip to the field. Carry along ammo, compass, GPS, matches, maps or any other small items needed on a short hunt. I found that it is perfect for carrying my compact binoculars in one side pouch and my range finder in the other. It could also work well for black powder hunters to take along extra bullets and supplies, or hikers to take along small survival items and snaks.

Don Scott has another winner with this little bag. I have been using these for six years and they are the best. For the range or in the field, they can not be beat. The ustomer service at dog-gone-good is the best you will find anywhere. Don Scott makes sure every bag is superior quality and you will not be dissapointed. As a shooter and hunter, he was unsatisfied with the quality and design of conventional shooting rests. After years of redesign and field testing, he developed what I think is the best shooting rest available today.

The bags are made with premium quality leather and Cordura nylon and are guaranteed for life. The design of the bench bag is rock steady and grips the rifle forend like a soft vice for stability and accuracy. They are heavy enough for steady support, yet light enough for easy transport and setup. Your expensive custom rifle stock is cradled in a suede glove, with no metal or screws that could scratch or mar the finish of your prize gun. Use it any where--at the range, from the deer stand, or even on the hood of your new truck. Steady as a rock and as gentle as your mother's hands. As he sat sipping his coffee, a young woman sat down next to him. She turned to the cowboy and asked, "Are you a real cowboy?"

He replied, "Well, I've spent my whole life breaking colts, working cows, going to rodeos, fixing fences, pulling calves, bailing hay, doctoring calves, cleaning my barn, fixing flats, working on tractors, and feeding my dogs, so I guess I am a cowboy."

She said, "I'm a lesbian. I spend my whole day thinking about women. As soon as I get up in the morning, I think about women. When I shower, I think about women. When I watch TV, I think about women. I even think about women
when I eat. It seems that everything makes me think of women."

The two sat sipping in silence. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust gases.

* Dual magnetos supply 44 amps to each spark plug. This is the output of an arc welder in each cylinder.

* Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. The engine can only be shut down by cutting the fuel flow.

* If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in the affected cylinders and then explodes with sufficient force to blow cylinder
heads off the block in pieces or split the block in half.

* In order to exceed 300 mph in 4.5 seconds, dragsters must accelerate an average of over 4G's. In order to reach 200 mph (well before half-track), the launch acceleration approaches 8G's.

* Dragsters reach over 300 miles per hour before you have completed reading this sentence.

* Top Fuel engines turn approximately 540 revolutions from light to light!

* Including the burnout, the engine must only survive
900 revolutions under load.

* The redline is actually quite high at 9,500 rpm.

* Assuming all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for free, and for once NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run costs an estimated $1,000.00 per second.

* The current Top Fuel dragster elapsed time record is 4.441 seconds for
the quarter mile (10/05/03, Tony Schumacher). The top speed record is
333.00 mph. Over a mile up the road, a Top Fuel dragster is staged and ready to launch down a quarter mile strip as you pass. You have the advantage of a flying start. You run the 'Vette hard up through the gears and blast across the starting line and past the dragster at an honest 200 mph. The 'tree' goes green for both of you at that moment.
The dragster launches and starts after you. You keep your foot down
hard, but you hear an incredibly brutal whine that sears your eardrums
and within 3 seconds, the dragster catches and passes you. He beats you to the finish line, a quarter mile away from where you just passed him.
Think about it, from a standing start, the dragster had spotted you 200 mph and not only caught, but nearly blasted you off the road when he passed you within a mere 1,320 foot long race course.
... and that my friend, is ACCELERATION!

GON Hunting

GON Hunting: "Stalking For Squirrels
By Brad Bailey
Just after daylight on December 14, Leonard Hampton and I were stalking squirrels on his Oglethorpe County hunting lease. We were following a small drain through big hardwoods hoping to see or hear a squirrel and it didnt take long. We heard the scrape of squirrel claws on bark and saw two gray squirrels chasing each other on a big tree. The two squirrels spiraling up and then down the side of a big pine tree were apparently oblivious to the two of us only 50 feet away.

Leonard braced his pump-action .22 against a tree and waited for a shot. And when one of the squirrels stopped momentarily to stare in our direction, the .22 fired and the squirrel tumbled.

Leonard Hampton, 74, lives in Watkinsville. He is both a self-employed forestry consultant and an accomplished squirrel hunter. After more than 65 years of hunting squirrels he still loves spending time chasing bushytails. He has been hunting squirrels ever since his father gave him a Remington single-shot .22 rifle with iron sights when he was a 9-year-old kid. During January he stalks for squirrels, trying to locate concentrations of squirrels near den trees. It is a technique that has proven very effective when the leaves are down and the weather is cold.

Today most of Leonards hunting is done with a .22 rifle, and he has a unique squirrel gun. It is a Winchester Model 61 pump that he bought in 1954 while he was stationed in Korea during a stint with the Army. He shoots hollow point, long-rifle shells, and the gun is deadly accurate with a Weaver four-power scope."

Georgia Outdoor News - GON Home Page

Georgia Outdoor News - GON Home Page: "Baiting Bill Won't Be Debated At Capitol This Week
HB 1285, the bill which would make it legal to hunt deer over a feeder in an area south of and including Heard, Troup, Meriwether, Pike, Lamar, Monroe, Jones, Baldwin, Washington, Glascock, Jefferson and Burke counties, will not see a debate on the floor of the Georgia House of Representatives this week. Are we ready to speand another $15 to $30 a month for mobile TV and music downloads? This study says a resounding 'no'. But, should the carriers be targeting the mass cellular public for these services? Recent MVNOs such as Amp'd and Helio seem to be targeting the right demographic - but can they afford it?

The thing about this RBC Capital Markets study is that it did not heavily count the age group that makes up most of the 'early adopter' group of cutting-edge mobile services, so the 75% that said they 'had no interest in mobile TV' are really not the target market for these services in most cases anyway. However, the under-24 age group is probably the least-capable of financially purchasing most of these high-end services at their current cost - so are the carriers missing the mark by trying to get young'ens to try and uptake all this visual and audible mobile candy? If they don't soon start recouping the billions spent on 3G networks, investors may be asking the same question."

Receipe

Receipe: "Appalachian Whitetail Association Recipe Of The Month
SALT FORK DEER CAMP SPECIAL
Brown 2 pounds of ground beef or venison in a skillet and drain.
Mix together in a large bowl and stir:
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 can chicken and rice soup
2 (15 oz) cans of Ranch Style Texas Beans or 1 (28 oz) can Bushs Bold and Spicy Baked Beans.
2 (10oz) cans Rotel Tomatoes with green chilies
1 (4oz) can chopped green chilies
1 (16oz) bottle of Ortega medium (or hot) taco sauce
* Can be made extra spicy
Stir mixture into the ground beef or venison.
Grated CheeseMexican four cheese mix, or mixture of Monterey Jack & Cheddar (The more, the better. Here's a few tips that may help that dream become a reality. Mature bucks are less active than other deer. A buck that's lived 5 years or longer has learned to conserve critical energy, and he's also learned to avoid humans. To get a shot at a big buck, you may have to hunt at odd times (during the middle of the day) and in odd places, where deer seldom encounter humans. Use Enough Gun - A trophy buck is a much larger and tougher animal to drop than an immature buck or a doe. Many trophy whitetails are shot each year with light rifles and bullets designed for varmints. A hunter should never select a rifle that recoils so fiercely that he dreads squeezing the trigger. On the other hand, he should select enough gun to humanely dispatch his quarry under less-than-ideal circumstances. When you finally get a shot at the buck of a lifetime, that animal probably won't be standing broadside at 50 yards. Most trophy whitetail veterans prefer a rifle that handles a well-made bullet weighing at least 130 grains. If recoil is a factor, install a premium recoil pad or even a muzzle brake that reduces perceived recoil by as much as 60 percent. The drawback to the muzzle brake is increased muzzle blast. Hearing protection should be worn whenever a firearm is discharged. Know Your Firearm - Whether you hunt with a shotgun or a rifle, practice with the firearm until you are certain of its capabilities and your ability to handle it. Trophy deer hunting usually means long periods of inactivity punctuated by the sudden and often unpredictable appearance of a target buck. The entire season may hinge on a five-second opportunity. This is no time to wonder where your rifle will shoot at 200 yards or whether the buckshot pattern is dense enough for a clean kill at 60 yards. Those issues must be settled during practice sessions in the off-season, which is also the best time to experiment with various bullet designs and loads to determine which load works best for your particular gun. Once the hunting season begins, making the shot should be second nature.

Hunting Stories -- MonsterMuleys.com

Hunting Stories -- MonsterMuleys.com: "'Hard Work and Determination Pays Off'
Written by Brian Balfour

Colorado's opening day of the third rifle season had come and gone with no shooter bucks. It was a great day spent with my dad and future brother-in-law, Nic. I was the only one with a tag that season. We knew there were some nice bucks in the area due to the size of some of the tracks.

Morning two was here! We arrived at our hunting area twenty minutes before shooting light. We could see some deer feeding on the horizon. They were already up! We stalked in on the deer, but they hit the trees before we got to them. We spent the morning glassing a large area of grass, pinion, and juniper trees. We saw some bucks that were decent, but still not the one I was looking for. Mid-day was slow with not much activity. We decided to move a little ways from where we were hunting and try something new.

We setup in the shadows of some large trees. It was around 2:30 pm when the deer began heading into the grassy areas to feed. It was an overcast afternoon with a slight breeze. A storm was forecasted to hit soon.
My dad, brother-in-law, and I were spread out along a hillside to see the most country possible. About an hour had passed when my dad motioned for me to come over to where he was. I quickly gathered my gear and quietly headed that way. As I got closer, I could see him signaling to me that he had a buck in sight. I arrived at his location and he told me it was on the tree line, which was 491 yards. He said it was a shooter.

I knew it was going to be a tough shot, so I lowered my bipods and used my backpack to get a dead solid rest. I looked through my scope and could see the buck standing behind some brush. He was a 160-170 class muley, plenty good for me. I knew I would have to wait for the deer to present me with a better shot though.

I kept my finger on the safety and was ready for the moment of truth. About ten minutes had passed and buck fever had set in. He was feeding right back into the trees and still had not given me a clear shot. I noticed there was a very small opening that he was going to walk through. I focused on that point.
Sure enough, he stopped to feed right where I needed him to! I took a deep breath, flipped of the safety, exhaled slowly, and squeezed the trigger. My 264 Winchester Magnum roared and the deer jumped. He was hit! I could hear the loud pop when the bullet hit him. Nic and I gathered our stuff and went to the location of the buck. I finally found some blood about 15 yards from where I had hit him. I heard a noise from below, and it sounded like a wounded animal running. He was not down!

From everything I have learned, now is when you give the animal some time and don't push him. I knew there were other hunters in the area, so that made our decision difficult. What if he didn't stop and walked into the open for one of them? We could see orange on a nearby ridge and figured we better chance it or he would be in someone else's freezer.
We had only an hour of light left---time was running short!

We found blood and began tracking. He bedded several times, but continued to flee. Soon, it was dark and we decided to call it a day and pick up on the track the next morning. Weather was still a concern, but we had no other choice.

The next morning it was my dad, grandparents, and I on the trail---Nic had to work. It began raining, but luckily ended quickly. My dad was on the blood trail while I setup in a nearby sage flat. My grandparents were glassing from some high points.

Soon, my dad called me and said he had just jumped the buck and it was headed my way. My heart began racing and buck fever again set in. The buck was below me, but I couldn't see him through the thick brush. Suddenly, the buck bedded again, so I went straight in after him. Then, there he was only 15 yards away. He broke into a run and I shot----the buck went down.

My trophy buck scored 166-1/8 gross, was a typical 4x4, and was 26 inches wide. With the help of God, hard work, and determination, I was able to harvest this nice buck. I would like to thank my family for their help. Without them, I would not have taken the great trophy.

Trophy Whitetail Deer Hunting-SaltFork Hunts

Whitetail Deer & RIo Grande Turkey Hunting In Texas & Oklahoma

Oklahoma Whitetail Deer Hunting

Saltfork East

In 2003 the State of Oklahoma extended its whitetail deer season for two and a half weeks to coincide with rut. The regular gun season starts a bit after mid November (depending on the year) and continues until early December. An Additional black powder season is available in late October. The archery season begins in September. We are pleased to be able to offer prime white tail deer hunting for these periods each year. The Saltfork operations in Oklahoma began in 2003 and 2004. We have two different Oklahoma operations, Saltfork East and Saltfork Erick. Saltfork East is located literally right on the Texas/ Oklahoma state line near Vinson while the Saltfork Erick hunt is centered near Erick about 25 miles to the North. Our best deer to date has been a B&C 172 typical 13 point taken from Saltfork East. Both Oklahoma hunts produced some impressive deer in our 2005 season. The Saltfork East operation had an 80 % success rate last season and harvested the most impressive deer of the 2005 season.

We opened the 4.8 square miles of prime whitetail ranch land in 2003 and have added to it in both 2004 and 2005. The hunting area includes rolling grasslands, creek bottoms and numerous ravines and dry washes. The hunting area has been set up the a series of ground blinds and tripods to allow for the best possible coverage regardless of wind direction and the fluctuations in the weather. The ranch has two large food plots of winter wheat and 15 additional strategically placed deer feeders. We plan on adding several more large food plots in 2006. The ranch has small creeks and springs as well as stock ponds which provide year round water access.
We will book a maximum of 8 hunters a week on the Saltfork East Oklahoma operation in 2006. Please contact Saltfork Hunts at 423-272-1827 or Robert Ingram (1-940-969-3091) to secure your reservations or for further information and hunt details. The Black powder season will be limited to only 5 hunters and will be scheduled at times to be arranged with each hunting party. Bow hunting will be restricted to accommodate only 4 hunters for the entire season. The costs of these hunts will be the same as our Texas operation—$1800 .00 per hunter with a non refundable deposit of $900.00 due by March 30th.
Hunters who select the Oklahoma Saltfork East hunt make arrangements to stay in Wellington, Texas. The Saltfork East hunters should make reservations in Wellington at the Cherokee Inn (806-4472508) or at the Quail Lodge Bed and Breakfast (806-447-1021). Prices range from $60 to $75 per night. The hunting area is approximately 15 miles from Wellington.

SaltFork Burrows

Saltfork Burrows was the second major area we opened in Western Oklahoma during 2004; it is prime whitetail habitat and offers over 3000 acres of food plots, tree lines, shelterbelts and abundant water. The Burrows operation is a series of sections characterized by numerous wheat and peanut fields surrounded by shelterbelts with many mature trees. The Saltfork Burrows location is the area which offers the greatest opportunity for bow hunting. There are many stands of small oaks throughout the properties as well as areas of dense cover. Ranch owners have planted additional food plots and placed deer feeders throughout the hunting area to better attract and hold the whitetail population.
SaltFork Burrows will have the same numerical limitations concerning the number of hunters per week as in our Saltfork East operation. Hunters selecting the Saltfork Burrows option will want to make arrangements to stay at the Burrows Bed and Breakfast (1-580-515-4468) or the Days Inn in Erick at Exit 7 off Interstate 40. Lodging costs are $60 to $75 per night depending on your choice. For hunting reservations or additional information please contact Bruce Goodrow (423-272-1827) or Mark Burrows (580-526-8276).

Colt AR15, M16, rifles

The Colt AR15 has been one of America's most controversial rifles since its introduction during the Viet Nam War. People either love it or hate it, not too many in the middle. I decided to get one before Colt was out of business. After a few trips to the range and hunting, I am truly impressed with the rifle and sorry I waited so long to own one. Rapid fire does not impress me, but accuracy does.
My rifle is a Colt Match Target (flat top) with 16' heavy barrel with 1 in 9 twist. It has a removable handle so that a scope or optical site can be easily mounted. It comes with match rear sights and regular front site. My eyes are not what they used to be so I first opted for a Trijicon ACOG Reflex optical sight. This site is great for general use. You can order it with a mount for either version of the AR15. The site is the 'dot' type, not a cross hair and it has no magnification. My sight has a 7 minute of angle orange dot, but can now be purchased with a 3 MOA dot for more precise aiming. A tritium lamp powers the dot in low light conditions, with no batteries required and it has no off/on switch like most dot sights During day light, the dot is power by fiber optics absorbing the surrounding light.
After a couple of trips to the range, I couldn't help but wondering how accurate the rifle was, so I decided to mount a scope on the rifle for some target work. Finding a set of mounts for the flat top AR15 presents a challenge. Where could I get a set of mounts high enough for a correct sight picture? Even with a tall set of mounts, the scope is still too low to easily look through. The answer is a set of see-through mounts (mine are Redfield) that is usually seen on only deer rifles. The extra height brings the scope up to a comfortable height. NOTE: Some people worry about the front sight blocking the view of the scope unless the scope is mounted above the front sight. Actually, this is of no concern. Your mounts for the scope need to bring the scope to the same height as the iron sights, or to a comfortable height for viewing through the scope. The scope will "look around" the front sight even if the front sight extends up to cross hair level of the front lenses. I mounted a Leupold VXIII 3.5x10 for accuracy testing.

On the first trip to the range I was hoping for one MOA groups or 1" at a 100 yards. After a few zero shots to get on target, I tried a load that shot well in my Kimber M84 bolt action. I could not believe what was happening on the next few shots. The AR15 was shooting under one inch for the first five shots!!! This was an off the rack gun, not some custom job. The hard part of shooting the rifle accurately was dealing with the trigger. It broke pretty cleanly, but it must have been 8-10 pounds. Needless to say, I had to work on the trigger. I looked around the Internet and talked to a few people and decided to replace the factory trigger assembly with one made by JP Enterprises. I installed it myself with the excellent instructions provided with the trigger. Took about an hour or so. The JPE trigger is completely adjustable, takes all the creep out and breaks like glass. I set it to fire with about 3 lb. of pull. Now back to the range for the next round of tests. The new trigger now lets me consistently shoot 1/2 MOA groups with handloads. It loves Sierra 53 gn match HP's with 26.5 grains of H335.. On a recent prairie dog hunt, MR. President couldn't believe how the AR15 would reach out there with the heavy barreled varmint rifles in the 250-300 yard range. One great thing that we noticed on the PD hunt is that the recoil is so light, the scope doesn't move off the target. You see the bullet hit the target through the scope.

Another great replacement accessory is the Pachmayr grip. It is thicker from front to back and positions the hand farther to the rear. The result is proper finger placement on the trigger, and improved trigger control.

I know some of you will not believe the groups sizes, and I may not be able to shoot those groups on my next trip to the range, but I now have total confidence in that rifle. I will trust it on the next hunt and I will trust it if I ever have to defend myself with it. It is more accurate than I am, and after shooting approximately 2000 rounds of different types of ammo, both factory and handloads, it has never misfired or jammed.

Great Service From Leupold

Leupold scopes are great. They not only perform well, but look great at the same time. I just do not like some of the the new styles of scopes that keep getting bigger and bigger -- 50+mm objectives, ocular ends growing every day and other "modern" styling. Needless to say, I love the sleek style of the Leupold.

I picked up a Vari-X III 3.5x10AO the other day on Ebay that was a good price and it had the gloss finish to match my rifle. The only thing I wanted to change about the scope was to add target knobs. Target knobs cost $100 to install so I zipped it off to Leupold which is all the way across the country from me. I was not expecting a long wait but it take two weeks just for the shipping.

Two weeks and two days later I had my scope back with target knobs installed and a note that they had replaced the objective lens. Although it was an old scope, it was in outstanding condition and I had not noticed any problem with the lens. I guess it didn't meet Leupold standards so they put in the new lens for FREE.

That is outstanding service and that's another reason I will stick with Leupold.

Stephanie's 8-Pointer

There is only one thing better than getting a wise old buck when you are a deer hunter like me--being with a son or daughter when they get their first buck.

Stephanie, my youngest daughter, and I were finally able to go deer hunting again a few days ago. Steph is a career minded 26 year old who loves the big city and works in Washington, DC in a fast moving computer software company. Seems we only get to visit for weekends or quick trips. I miss her but understand her career goals and am very proud of her.

This year was a little different. She was home for an entire week and we had a few days planned for deer hunting after Christmas. That day came on the 27th and we awoke to a nice sunny day that was not too cold. Off we went with camo, four wheeler and hot coffee to the a beautiful place I love with wooded creek bottoms and hay fields that are home to lots of whitetail does and a few good bucks. Some of my best deer hunting memories are from this place. Several good bucks taken, a few large wild boars, and seeing my buddy Fred take his first whitetail, a great 10-point buck, to mention a few.

But a memory I will always treasure is the hunt with Steph on one of the last days of 2005. We hunted a stand in the morning with no luck and decided to set up a father daughter deer drive about 1PM. I took Steph to an intersection of three creek bottoms where she might have a good chance of seeing deer traveling down the wooded passageways and told her keep a sharp eye out for movement. Old Dad would be the hound, circle around about a half mile and come up one the bottems hopeing to push a deer in her direction. I was just about to finish my way back up through the woods when I heard the shot from her .243 Remington. Upon arriving I could hardly believe my eyes. A whopping 8pt buck that weighed almost 200 pounds. He was an old fighter with tips broken off four of his tines. Yes, it was bigger than Dad's 8 point, and her first buck. She gets top braggin rights this year! We took pictures that I will soon post, and Steph donated the meat to Hunters For The Hungry program. It was the end of a perfect season and the perfect hunt.

Crossbow Hunting Expands

Headlines from the Treeline: "Crossbow Hunting Expands
By Ottie M. Now, using state-of-the-art manufacturing technology the scope and reticle are perfectly tuned to your rifle's ballistic performance. The result is a custom, long distance shooting system with astonishing accuracy. You simply provide them with the ballistic coefficient and velocity, or alternately, the specific factory load you are using, and the Custom Shop will do the rest.

The Custom Shop uses an ultra-modern electroform metal deposition process that incorporates micron precision to create your reticle. This new, custom reticle features ballistic compensation, with a 200 yard zero, and dots marking the holdover points for 300, 400, and 500 yards. They will also include reticle features for range estimating.

Interested in any other reticles? The Leupold Custom Shop can install nearly any of the non-illuminated reticle styles pictured in their catalog or website in any of our non-illuminated scopes. Choose from four sizes of Duplex, two Leupold Dots, a variety of Target Dots, or even the Leupold Mil Dot reticle to mention just a few. In most cases, illuminated reticles can only be installed in illuminated reticle scopes.

Custom Bullet Drop Compensation Dials
You know your rifle, riflescope, load, and ballistics like nobody else. Now you can have custom Bullet Drop Compensation (BDC) dials for your Leupold riflescope. Just fill out our ballistics worksheet (available at the website your Authorized Golden Ring Dealer) with your ballistics data, and Leupold will, in turn, create a precision laser engraved dial that allows you to adjust for bullet impact at extremely long range.

The positive click adjustment dials are made of aircraft-grade aluminum, with the appropriate ranges clearly and accurately laser engraved on the dial. Simply determine range to the target then adjust to the corresponding mark on the elevation dial to achieve startling long range precision. If you’re a serious long-distance shooter, this is a simple, yet extremely valuable modification to your scope that will prove its worth immediately in the field.

Long range shots become more precise and more ethical, greatly improving shooting with practice.

Wildlife Prints , Duck Stamp Prints

Wildlife Prints , Duck Stamp Prints: "Wildlife Art Prints
Phone 770-725-6786 E-mail art@clcweb.com
Wildlife Prints for Sale

Federal Duck Stamp Prints
First of State Duck Stamp Prints
Limited Edition Prints
Conservation Prints

* Private collector liquidating 25-year collection of Federal Duck Stamp Prints, State Duck Stamp Prints, and Limited Edition Wildlife Prints.
* All are in Mint Condition. In order to compensate for target distance, simply turn the continuously variable dial according to the user calibrated yardage scale. The laser is turned on by a totally sealed, magnetically operated switch, activated with a magnetic finger ring. Direct contact with the switch is not required thus no unwanted force is applied to the bow. Like the switch, the laser/stabilizer is totally sealed, weatherproof and extremely rugged. It is designed for the precision requirements of 3D shooting and the extreme hunting environment. This user friendly ambidextrous design complements the existing pin sight to add an extra dimension of shooting ability.
The Target Master Sight provides unmatched accuracy, especially in low light conditions. When you have that critical shot to make and can't see the sight pins, you need a Target Master Sight! .... light em up.... knock em down!
Machined of aluminum, nylon and stainless on the latest CNC machines to produce excellent quality, accuracy and dependability. The retribution came after the landowners were confronted by hunters who were using dogs on their property.
Another landowner said that deer dog hunters shot at a deer crossing their land forcing them to lie down or risk being hit by a stray bullet. Other related stories included fences being cut, dead animals being placed in yards, verbal threats and many other types of harassment.
Commissioner Sheffield Nelson of Little Rock said these types of stories could result in a ban of hunting deer with dogs in Arkansas. 'I want to be very clear that we have the health and safety of our citizens at risk here. I want to address it from the standpoint that we look at what other steps we should take - up to a partial or total ban of dog running if that becomes necessary, Nelson said.
On Oct. 29, the AGFC won a case dealing with the agency's decision to ban deer hunting with dogs in certain areas of the state.
The case dates back to July 2000 when the group filed suit challenging the AGFC's regulations that expanded the area in northern and eastern Arkansas where deer hunting with dogs was prohibited. The group has appealed the trial court's ruling to the Arkansas Supreme Court.
There has been a variety of statutes and regulations in Arkansas restricting the use of dogs for hunting deer dating back to the early 1900s. Since the early 1980s, the AGFC has prohibited hunting of deer with dogs any"

Georgia Hunters Make Donation to Food Bank

Georgia Hunters Make Donation to Food Bank

Georgia Outdoor News

GON Home Page

Check out the Georgia Outdoor News. To achieve the performance level that this cartridge offers and consumers have demanded, special blends of powders were used which cause semi-automatic firearms to cycle faster than with existing .22 caliber rimfire ammunition. This difference requires special bolt designs to maintain a safe shooting condition. Reputable firearms manufacturers that follow specifications set forth by the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute have designed their Mach 2 firearms with special care being given to this requirement.
Consumers desiring to modify existing semi-automatic firearms with after-market components are strongly cautioned that modification must be made to the bolts as well as the barrel. Modifications should only be made by competent gunsmiths properly trained in the modifications required.
In response to this, the following warning appears on each box of ammunition supplied by CCI:
'WARNING; To avoid serious injury use this ammunition only in firearms that have a barrel/chamber with standard SAAMI sporting dimensions for this Mach 2 .17 caliber cartridge AND a bolt specifically designed for this Mach 2 .17 caliber cartridge.'''"

Read the Old Deer Hunters' report on the Anschutz 1517 .17 HRM at .17 HRM Report:

Rifle Basix Replacement Triggers

Rifle Basix Triggers have been around since 1990, but I have just installed my first one in my Savage M93 .17 HRM that I reported on earlier this year. The M93's factory trigger must have weighed 20 pounds. I did some home gunsmithing on it to get it better, but when I found out about the Rifle Basix trigger (drop in & fully adjustable trigger),I put one on my Christmas wish list. Well, old Santa came through and now the Savage has a new trigger.

All Rifle Basix triggers are guaranteed as long as they are in service! Any Rifle Basix trigger will be repaired or replaced at no charge, providing they have not been modified. All Rifle Basix triggers are designed for the user to install. They are shipped complete with all parts necessary for installation, and with easy to follow instruction sheets.

The installation was easy and took only a few minutes to complete. Just push out three pins, replace the assembly, put the pins back in for initial installation. Then you drop in the trigger weight spring and the sear engagement spring and set screw, adjust according to the instructions and you have a great trigger pull. It can be set at less than a pound if you want or heavier. I set mine at 2 pounds. You can also remove all the creep (this is the great part of this replacement piece). So in about 15 minutes using only a screw driver I had a 2 pound trigger pull with no creep that broke like glass. The original safety works with the new trigger and the instructions were clear and precise.

Triggers are available for Remington 700, 7, 40X, 600, 660, Marlin bolt action rimfire's and Savage bolt actions rifles.

Prices run from $80-$150. Order online at www.riflebasix.com or some mail order catalogs like Midsouth Shooters Supply.

The cost of the Rifle Basix trigger may seem a bit high for an inexpensive rimfire rifle, but when you have a .17 HRM that shoots sub-MOA groups, the potential of the rifle can only be achieved with a great trigger. Now, let me at those pesky crows!!

For more hunting and shooting information, vist The Old Deer Hunters

22 Caliber Rifles

The 22 rimfire is the most popular rifle in America. Almost every hunter and shooter has at least one 22 caliber rimfire in their collection, and many have several. Almost every shooter started with a 22 and for good reason. The basic rifles are inexpensive, ammo is inexpensive, they have no recoil, and they are very accurate. Almost every gun company markets one or many variations of 22 caliber rifles - single shot, semi-auto, bolt action, pump and lever actions.
Photos and more of the story at22 Caliber Rifles

Kimber of Oregon M82 Rifle

Kimber has been in and out of the gun business for the last 25 years. I have owned several of the Kimber rifles and still have a few of them. I remember when I read about the M82 many years ago, wishing that I could afford one. It won me over because it was a scaled down version of a big game rifle. Steel and walnut in the classic design. I was used to plastic and aluminum 22 caliber rifles shooting a minute of squirrel, not tiny one-hole groups at 50 yards. One of these fine Kimbers would be mine some day. That day finally arrived and I now have a couple of Kimber .223's, a .22Mag and a M82 .22LR.

I walked into my local gun shop to look at the new production Kimber of America 22 rifle and found that they had one new Kimber 22, and one used Kimber M82 22LR hidden in the back of the store. I chose the used rifle for a couple of reasons (Photo 1, Photo 2). The older gun was about 99% condition and $125 less than the new one. The new Kimber 22 was $850 and the used rifle was $725 complete with Kimber rings and a Japanese 4X scope. I liked the stock better with the more appealing walnut and the checkered steel butt plate. My M82 appears to be a first run production. It has no suffix letter after the model number and the Kimber of Oregon, Clackamas, Oregon barrel stamp. If any of you readers can shed more light on the history of the rifle, please e-mail me and I will add your comments to the report. I had no doubt that either rifle would be very accurate. My two M84 Kimbers in .223 shoot half inch groups at 100 yards and my other 22LR and 22Mag shoot less that half inch groups at 50 yards with the ammo it likes.

Photos and rest of the story at Kimber M82 Rifle

U.S. Army Awards Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc.

U.S. Army Awards Sturm, Ruger & Co., Inc.
Contract for 5,000 Pistols
STURM, RUGER & CO., INC.

Remington Model 700 CDL

From Remington Arms
The newest member of the Model 700 family, the Remington Model 700 CDL (Classic Deluxe) offers renowned accuracy in a classically styled design.
The traditional straight-comb American walnut stock includes a satin finish, finely cut checkering, right-handed cheek piece, black fore-end tip and grip cap, and sling swivel studs. The satin blued finish of the barreled action and the jeweled bolt body completes the tasteful design.
Like all Model 700 rifles, this one shoots as good as it looks. The hinged floor plate magazine has a four round capacity in standard calibers and a three round capacity in magnum calibers. Finished off with the revolutionary R3 recoil pad.
http://www.remington.com/firearms/centerfire/700cdl.htm"

Barnes Introduces 6.8mm Triple-Shock X-Bullet

Barnes Introduces 6.8mm Triple-Shock X-Bullet
From Barnes Bullets

Responding to increased interest in the new 6.8mm cartridge for sporting use, Barnes Bullets has developed a 110-grain Triple-Shock X-Bullet for hunters. The .277-inch bullet delivers excellent results in both 6.8mm and .270 Winchester rifles.

Like all Triple-Shock X-Bullets, the new 110-grain Boattail features 100 percent copper construction. The bullet's specially designed nose cavity begins opening on impact, and quickly expands to form four razor-sharp copper petals that slice through game. The 6.8mm bullet delivers deep penetration, with virtually 100 percent weight retention.

Barnes also offers a non-expanding 85-grain 6.8mm copper bullet for police and military applications.

The new 6.8mm Triple-Shock X-Bullet will be available in late October.

www.buckmasters.com

Arkansas Schedules Meetings About Hunting Regs

Hunters can voice their opinions about hunting regulations and seasons at one of 11 public meetings to be held around the state on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005.
The meetings are part of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission's annual hunting regulations process. This solid copper bullet is tougher than lead bullets, has a higher ballistic coeficient, and penetrates deeper than conventional lead bullets.

First, there is no lead core to separate or break apart on impact, so the bullet retains it's weight and retains more killing power. Second, the the solid copper bullet weighs less than a lead core bullet of the same size and shape so it can be fired at a higer velocity. A 150 grain .30 caliber bullet will be longer and have a higher ballistic coefficient and sectional density than a 150 .30 caliber bullet.

What all this means is that Barnes X-Bullets hits harder, shoots flatter, and penetrates better than any lead core bullet can.

CC

Free Targets! Congratulations, Fred, and by the way, you are out of Buck Tags this year and I stll have one left for old Mossy Horn when he walks out!!
Chester

25 pt buck

.

25 PT Buck

from the Newton County Times Newspaper

Kylan McCutcheon, 16, of Parthenon recently harvested one of the largest whitetail deer on record in the state of Arkansas, according to Arkansas Game & Fish wildlife biologist Mark Baron. McCutcheon shot the 25-point buck last Sunday morning in Newton County with a 30-06 rifle at a distance of 150 yards. PARTHENON - A 16-year-old youth from Parthenon recently harvested one of the largest whitetail deer ever recorded in the state, according to Arkansas Game & Fish wildlife biologist Mark Baron.Kylan McCutcheon shot a 25-point buck in Newton County last Sunday morning using a 30-06 rifle at a distance of about 150 yards. He was using a 3x9x40 Bushnell scope mounted on the rifle. The Jasper High School junior said the buck has an unofficial score of 205 points based on requirements from the Boone and Crockett Club, a non-profit organization founded in 1887 by President Theodore Roosevelt."I've been told that my buck scored 10 points shy of the state record of 215 points," said the son of Stanley and Marketta McCutcheon. The hunter said he was in a ground blind Nov. 14 when he spotted the buck chasing a doe about 10:15 a.m. "The buck was running after the doe but he must've got wind of me because he slowed down, raised his nose up in the air and snorted and that's when I shot him one time in the chest," he said.Kylan's shot was accurate but didn't prove immediately fatal to the big buck. The hunter and his father followed the deer's trail for several hours until Kylan had to leave to go to work at a convenience store in Jasper. "My father tracked the buck until he had to give up at dark. We found the deer about 24 hours after I shot him a mile and a half from the point where he was hit."The big buck was not weighed but after being properly checked in with the state, it was transported to the Big Buck Classic Club in Little Rock before it will be brought back to local taxidermist Roy Carter.Kylan said there is no truth to the rumors that he has been offered a large amount of money from Bass Pro Shop to buy the deer. "I've even heard the rumors myself that I've been offered from $20,000 to $40,000 for the deer but that's just not true," he said. However, he said he has received business offers from various companies to sell replicas of the antlers from the buck. He won't know the official Boone and Crockett Club score until the skull and antlers can be officially measured after drying at least 60 days from the day after the trophy was taken.Kylan said he estimated that the deer was at least 4 1/2 years old but state officials who examined the photograph estimated the deer could be 8 or 9 years old. As yearlings during the spring and summer, whitetail bucks grow their first set of antlers made up of true bone with growth beginning in mid-March to April. As the antlers appear, they are covered with a soft coating of blood vessels and nerves called 'velvet.' Growth continues until August or September when bucks then rub the velvet off on small trees, fence posts or on the ground revealing the hard bone antlers. The size of the rack depends on age and nutritional intake.A buck's first antler rack can range from two single spikes up to 10 points. Bucks don't keep their antlers year-round because they are shed during January and February every year."In my opinion McCutcheon's buck will probably score higher points on the non-typical deer point system instead of the typical system," said Baron. "At any case it has the largest antlers on a whitetail deer that I've ever seen in the state of Arkansas, dead or alive."

Remington Mountain Rifle in .280 Rem Caliber

http://www.clcweb.net/Shooting/_280_Remington
_Mountain_Rifle/_280_remington_mountain_rifle.html

Great Buck

Hey, Kevin
Give us some comments on the hunt and when we can see the show on TV.

<img border='0' style='border:1px solid #000000; Not great hunting weather, although it might seem better if I did not have a 10 pt in the freezer. Have to pick up the meat today, and maybe Hoss and I can check out the fringes of the pasture for a stray doe toward the end of the day.

I need to load a few rounds of .280 Remington for the Mountain rifle an try out that new Leupold 4.5x14 Tactical scope. I zeroed it at the Gunsite Hills tactical range and it shot well out to 400 yards. I'd like to take a deer at 300+ yards with it. It shoots a bit flatter than my .308. Velocity on the .280 is 150 fps faster and the ballistic coeficient is better. The longest shot I have made with it was around 300 yards.

I guess now is as good a time as any to load some .280's so it's off to load I go.

CC

Nikon Buckmaster Scope

Nikon Buckmaster Scope

Chase Outdoor Adventures, Hunting TV Show for all Hunters

Chase Outdoor Adventures, Hunting TV Show for all Hunters

Freds' First Buck

My friend Fred McLean got his first buck yesterday. This hunt was filled with highs and lows but I guess it was worth it. Fred had never been deer hunting but he had done lots of shooting and is a great person. I sat with him at the stand since it was his first hunt. We were expecting a doe but just before dark a nice buck came out and I told him he could shoot it.

It looked like a good shot but it was getting dark before we found the deer so we decided to come back the next morning. We were so close the night before but were happy to find the buck first thing this morning.
